Windhoek is Namibia's capital and the starting point for most trips. It sits at about 1,700 metres in the central highlands, and about 486,000 people live here (2023 census). Most visitors arrive at Hosea Kutako International Airport, 42 kilometres east of the city. On our 10 day tour your driver-guide meets you at the airport, and Windhoek is where the tour begins and ends.
Flights usually land in the morning or the evening. Your driver-guide meets you in the arrivals hall and drives you to your lodge, so you don't need to arrange a taxi or a hire car. On your last day, a private transfer takes you back to the airport. If you only need a transfer, tell us your flight details and we'll quote it. Plan your tour
Many guests spend a half day here. Good places to start:
Ask us if you would like a city orientation with your guide. It is part of Day 1 on our 10 day tour.
Windhoek has more than 300 sunny days a year. Winter nights (June to August) can be cold, with average lows of about 6°C in July, and days are warm and dry. Rain falls mostly in summer. See Namibia weather and best time to visit.
One night at the start and one at the end is usual. If you arrive on a late flight, plan an extra night before the long drives begin.
Windhoek nights on our 10 day tour are at a guesthouse or hotel of the same level as the rest of your tour. Your quote names the property.

Windhoek is high, so nights cool quickly. June and July lows of about 6 to 7°C surprise many visitors. The rains fall mostly from December to March.
If you arrive in the morning, your driver-guide takes you to your lodge and, on our 10 day tour, shows you around the city in the afternoon. If you arrive in the evening, you go straight to dinner and rest. Either way, Day 2 starts with a long drive to the Namib Desert, so we suggest an early night.
Most visitors from the UK, the USA and the European countries we serve need a visa for Namibia. See Namibia visa and entry requirements before you book your flights.
